What we do

Suicide Outreach Awareness Resources (SOAR) is a part of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs that has been created to be a hub to provide resources, up to dates information and research, and training to the members in the community. Our goal is to raise public awareness about suicide and better identification and referral of people at risk for suicide.

The Council on Alcohol and Drugs is a 50+ year-old nonprofit, 501(c)3 substance abuse prevention and education agency that develops programs and materials based on the most current research on drug use and its impact on community. The Council is an official affiliate of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and a partnership program of the South

Carolina State Chamber of Commerce. Our offices are located in the Georgia Chamber of Commerce headquarters in Atlanta. The Council's Drugs Don't Work program has been the official drug free workplace provider for the state of Georgia since 1993. Drugs Don't Work in Georgia is funded by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Division of Addictive Diseases, Office of Prevention Services and Programs.

What does QPR stand for?

The ultimate goal of QPR training is to prevent suicide attempts and completions, and to find relief for those suffering from suicidal ideation.

Q = Question

Never pass judgement on a person thinking about suicide and we never tell them to not tell us the truth.

P = Persuade

Your willingness to listen and to help can rekindle hope and make all the difference.

R = Refer

Immediately refer someone who needs help to a local professional or a crisis helpline.

why we do it

People considering suicide fully understand that talking about suicide is taboo. As a result, and out of fear of being rejected, they are often reluctant to tell others how desperate and hopeless they feel. As long as suicide remains a subject too frightening to discuss with friends, family, co-workers, first finders, clergy, healthcare providers, hotline volunteers, and other caring people, those who may have begun their journey to suicide will find little relief, hope or comfort. It is our goal to ensure we are all equipped with knowledge about suicide prevention and local available resources to be used to discourage the completion of a death by suicide when possible.

AREA WE SERVE

The main areas of focus in Region 6 are Crawford, Peach, and Houston Counties. These counties have been identified as having high rates of deaths by suicide. It is the goal to focus on the following initiatives to begin bridging the gap where there is a lack of resources and creating a safe open space for communication in all areas:

  • Providing Evidenced Based Trainings in the workforce and to identified Community Change Agents
  • Trainings include Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), Counseling on Access to                  Lethal Mean (CALM), and Assessing & Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR).
  • Increase awareness of Mental Health resources in the community
  • Use media outlets as a tool to promote Suicide Outreach Awareness Resources (SOAR) to our targeted population
